Welcome everyone to Aimila's handmade craft class!!

On hot summer days I really can't muster any passion to work. And then, poor me, pulled the shade net N times, and again and again to the Nth power, it got torn apart by the wind.

My heart is so tired, the temperature is so high and I don't know what to do, I really don't want to get heatstroke, so I can only let them be. I'll fiddle with it again when I'm fully revived.

Why am I making a tutorial for this internet-famous hanging basket this time? You all should know that I'm quite eager to learn. Lately I've been idle, but I haven't slacked off on learning at all. At first I was looking into clothing-making techniques, and I even bought the books.

However, Bilibili actually pushed home-decor content to me. Since B-niang recommended it so sincerely, I couldn't not watch it and let down B-niang's good intentions. So then I watched several episodes of rental apartment makeover videos, and B-niang stirred things up for me once again!

This time it pushed some INS-style things to me. It just so happens that I was also learning rope braiding, so along the way, I learned MACRAME...

So, comrades, listen to my advice: never fall into the handmade craft pit in this life, it burns money in every way. Because once you try one thing and feel satisfied, you'll launch a challenge into another field, and then there's no stopping it.

Alright, back to the point. The reason I'm making this tutorial is that among the things I've been learning lately, this is the only one that has anything to do with plants. And it's very simple and easy to pick up, and very stylish too.

The things you need are also fairly simple. As long as you have rope and a pair of hands, you can pretty much get it done. You don't need to buy complicated and expensive tools, which is really super nice. The highlight is that this handmade craft is very suitable for summer.

Materials needed to make a MACRAME plant hanging basket:

3 or 4MM cotton rope (other ropes will work too, as long as the length is enough);

Natural-colored wooden beads or other pretty little beads;

A round hanging ring, or you can bend one yourself from wire, or a wooden stick will do too;

Of course, scissors must not be forgotten!

Before starting the formal tutorial, let's first understand how to tie a few basic knots. Once you've learned them, you can try different combinations for braiding yourself.

Lark's head knot

As the name suggests, it's for fixing things. It's usually used to secure rope to a wooden stick or ring. Method: fold the rope in half, then drape the folded end over the stick, then pull out the 2 strands from the long end through the middle, adjust it and it's done. The rope can go upward or be draped from the back upward, just like in the picture above.

Square knot

How should I explain the square knot? I don't know if you braided bracelets as a kid, but the technique is the same.

Take 2 strands as the central axis, then take one rope from the left or right and lay it over the central axis, then lay the other one over the rope that was wrapped around, then thread it out through the hole on the left or right and tighten.

This counts as a half knot, then start from the other direction and tie one more with the same technique, and that's a square knot.

Spiral band square knot

Once you know the square knot, the spiral knot isn't hard either. You just keep starting from the same side without switching left and right. For example, if you start with the right rope first, then just keep using the right rope to tie knots. It will form this spiral shape. With a different starting end, the direction of the spiral will also be different.

Macrame knot (clove hitch)

The macrame knot has many variations; you can braid it horizontally, diagonally, or vertically. Method: take one cotton rope as the axis, then wrap the lower cord up over it and adjust to secure. You need to wrap twice in total for one complete clove hitch. Please refer to the diagram above for how to lay the ropes.

Square knot netting

The square knot has many variations, and this is one of the more widely used ones. First tie a row of square knots across, then in the 2nd row, skip the first two strands and also skip the last two strands. Repeat this pattern and it becomes netting. Very simple. And that's it for the basic knots. Here I've brought you the most basic hanging basket tutorial. Hold on tight, the old driver is about to set off.

SHOW TIME:

What we're going to learn is this fresh and simple hanging basket. We need the following materials:

A metal hanging ring, and a roll of cotton rope about 3 millimeters thick. We need to cut 8 strands of cotton rope about 2.5 meters each. The length can be decided according to the environment where you want to hang it; it can be longer or shorter. You can compare the cotton rope at the spot where you want to hang the plant, get a feel for it, and then leave some extra length for braiding.

Fold the 8 strands of cotton rope in half, then drape them over the metal ring, and take another small piece of cotton rope to wrap the beginning part.

The wrapping method is: fold one end of the rope in half, then use the long end to wrap around the folded rope and the main body, wrap until you reach the reserved loop, then pass the remaining rope through the loop, then pull the rope at the other end tight, finally tidy it up, and cut off the excess rope.

Then we divide the ropes into 4 strands; 4 ropes tied together form one group of square knots.

According to the size of the plant pot we want to hang, mark the length, then tie the second group of square knots.

Tie the square knots according to the marks we just made; this is more accurate. Take 2 strands from each section and tie a square knot with 2 strands from the adjacent section. This forms a net.

After leaving a section of length at the end, just tie the remaining ropes into knots. You can also take a piece of cotton rope and wrap and tie it like at the beginning, which looks even more beautiful. At this point, we can put the plant on it, hang it wherever we like, and it's beautiful.

Then let's enjoy a round of works by INS masters, which can give everyone some different inspiration:

This one mainly uses diagonal clove hitch knots.

These mainly use spiral knots and some Chinese knot elements, plus dyeing, making them especially playful.

This series is all square knots and diagonal clove hitch knots.

This one is entirely square knots, amazing!

Spiral knots, netted square knots, diagonal clove hitch knots, and the finishing part in the middle uses a variation of the square knot. When tying the square knot, leave a longer distance, and after tying a whole square knot, push it upward, and this knot will form.

These two with boards added are also very suitable for holding succulents. There's also another method where you place a round board in the middle, which can also hold items, and it looks very nice.

This one is spiral knots plus square knots plus natural-colored wooden beads, also very eye-catching.

This one is purely spiral knots.

The black version is a simple combination of square knots, and this fresh one is also a variation of square knots. By stretching the distance between square knots, you get this chain-like knot.

Various combinations of macrame knots.

Macrame knots, square knots, square knots and macrame knots.

Alright, after seeing so many designs, it's time to make a plant hanging basket of your own with your own hands.

Finally, let me show you the one I braided, to prove that I can do it. So see you next time~
