Gardeners often ask Chengcheng: What fertilizer should I give gardenias? When is the best time to apply it? Let me tell you: there are two types of gardenia, one is the large-leaf gardenia, and the other is the small-leaf gardenia!

First, let's talk about what fertilizer to give them!

1、No matter which type of gardenia we grow, they all like slightly acidic soil. If you are growing them in northern regions, then we had best give them ferrous sulfate once a month to supplement the soil with a certain amount of acidity,

because if ferrous sulfate is not used for a long time, once the soil becomes too alkaline, the gardenia will definitely not grow well, let alone bloom!

2、Whether it is the large-leaf gardenia or the small-leaf gardenia, during their growing period, in order to make their root systems well developed, stems thick and strong, and leaves thick, they should mainly be given a compound fertilizer with a balanced ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. During the flowering period, in order to make them grow more buds and bloom more, they should mainly be given a high-phosphorus fertilizer!

Next, let's talk about when to apply it!

1、The large-leaf gardenia blooms twice a year, once in spring and once in autumn, so in summer we should give them a compound fertilizer with a balanced ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, once every 10 days. When the autumn flowering period arrives, switch to a high-phosphorus fertilizer, such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate, in order to make them bloom more!

2、The small-leaf gardenia can bloom multiple times a year, and if cared for well, it can basically bloom in all four seasons, so compared with the large-leaf gardenia, the small-leaf gardenia has higher fertilizer requirements!

We should give it a high-phosphorus fertilizer 2-3 times every month, because each flowering consumes a lot of nutrients, so after each bloom fades, we should also promptly supplement it with a three-element compound fertilizer!
