Canna lily is a common flowering ornamental plant in subtropical and tropical regions, with large, brilliantly colored flowers in rich hues and high ornamental value, so it is often grown in pots indoors. So how should Canna lilies be grown? Below is an introduction to the growing methods for potted Canna lilies.

Growing methods for potted Canna lilies

1. Use a deep, large pot with loose soil:Canna lily is a tuberous-rooted plant, so the pot should be rather deep and large; a clay pot with a diameter of 3040 cm can be used. It is highly adaptable and not choosy about soil, growing best in fertile, loose, well-drained sandy loam. You can make a growing medium by mixing equal parts leaf mold and vegetable garden soil, then adding a small amount of sand. When planting, set the tubers deep and cover with 68 cm of soil. Place a layer of broken hard plastic foam blocks at the bottom of the pot to help with aeration, drainage and removing the plant from the pot. Repot and change the soil once every spring.

2. Water moderately and fertilize frequently:During the growing period, the potting soil for Canna lilies should be kept alternately dry and moist; in the rainy season, drain standing water promptly to prevent waterlogging. During dormancy, the potting soil should be on the drier side. It likes fertilizer: besides adding some bone meal and nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer to the growing medium when potting, apply a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer about once every half month during the growing period. Do not fertilize while it is flowering; resume fertilizing after the flowers fade. Avoid applying nitrogen fertilizer alone, otherwise there will be many leaves and few flowers. Do not fertilize during dormancy.

3. It likes light and warmth and fears cold:Canna lily is a shade-loving flower native to the tropics, and it is best placed in a well-ventilated, sunny courtyard, rooftop garden or west-facing balcony, so that not only are the tubers large and the tillers numerous, but the flowers are also abundant and brightly colored. If placed in shade, the plant will be tall with few flowers of pale color, or even no flowers at all. It fears frost, snow and freezing; after Frost's Descent, cut off all the withered and scorched yellow leaves, turn an empty flower pot upside down over the pot, and it can overwinter safely outdoors south of the Yangtze River, while north of the Yangtze River it needs to be brought indoors to overwinter. Prune the flower stems in time. For potted Canna lilies, after the flowers fade, promptly cut the flower stem from the lower part of the stem, level with the soil surface, and fertilize to encourage new stems to sprout from the base of the stem; after 1.5 to 2 months it can bloom again. In this way, from late May to October it can produce 34 rounds of flowers, always keeping the flowers and leaves beautiful.

4. Division propagation is easy to succeed with:In spring, together with repotting and changing the soil, tip out the tubers and cut them into several pieces with a sharp knife; each piece must have at least 23 buds. Coat the cut surfaces with sulfur powder or wood ash, and plant them separately in pots. You can also breed seeds after flowering and sow them for propagation the following spring.

Precautions for growing potted Canna lilies

1. Ensure sufficient light:During the growing period, Canna lilies require ample light; make sure they receive at least 5 hours of direct sunlight every day.

2. Be careful to control the amount of fertilizer:Potted Canna lilies sometimes develop scorched leaf edges and yellowing, mainly caused by applying too much ferrous sulfate. If fertilizer is applied too strongly during the height of summer, it will scorch the rhizomes of the Canna lily and "burn it to death." During the flowering period and the winter period of the Canna lily, stop fertilizing.

3. Never water with water that is too cold in summer:In the hot summer, if the water used for watering is too cold, it can also cause scorched leaf edges.

4. Prune promptly after the flowers fade:When the flowers at the end of the stem fade, cut the stem and branches back to the base at any time, so as to encourage new shoots to sprout and grow flower stems that will bloom one after another.
