Portulaca planting method and timing: when is the best time to plant?
1. Planting time
It can be planted in spring, summer and autumn, but in most cases it is planted in spring. In southern regions you can choose to sow in mid-April; in more southerly regions or in the north, the timing can be adjusted appropriately, as long as the average temperature is around 18°C.
2. Planting method
1) Sowing
Scatter the seeds evenly over the soil and keep the temperature above 20°C; they will sprout in about 10 days.
2) Transplanting the seedlings
When the seedlings have grown to a certain height, they can be transplanted. If you want to grow them in soil, the plants do not need to be transplanted with soil attached, and they do not need frequent watering during the growing period. Also control the row spacing of the plants, and apply liquid fertilizer several times during this period. In addition, remember that when the seed capsules are about to split open, the seeds need to be harvested in time, otherwise they will scatter. If growing them in pots, the transplanting method is the same as for soil culture.
3) Watering
Water according to the condition of the potting soil. Generally, if it is not dry, there is no need to water; when you do water, water thoroughly in one go.
4) Correct fertilizing
It has low requirements for fertilizer. Applying monopotassium phosphate once every half month is enough; this will make the flowers it produces larger and more vivid, and the flowering period will also become longer.
5) Light
It very much likes sunny places, so while it is growing it must get plenty of sun; only then will it have lush, abundant leaves.
6) Temperature
It likes warm places. The best temperature for germination is 21 to 24°C; at this temperature, seedlings will grow in about a week.
