When to plant dahlias? A detailed guide to the best planting time
1. Planting time
The approximate planting time is when you start planting other vegetables that year, which is the best season to plant them, meaning spring is the best time to plant.
2. Planting requirements
1. Suitable temperature
It prefers cool weather, so it does not have very high temperature requirements. It usually grows well at 5 to 35°C and has very strong adaptability, but 10 to 25°C is best. In addition, if the temperature exceeds 30°C, it will enter a dormant state. When the temperature is below 0°C, its stems will wither, and at this point you can dig out its tubers and bury them in sand to plant again the following year.
2. Suitable growing environment
It is very fond of light, so choose a spot with long sunlight hours for planting. At the same time, it is not drought-tolerant and is afraid of moisture. In the south, there is often more rain, so when choosing where to plant, be sure to choose loose, well-drained sandy soil.
3. Planting methods
1. Division planting
If you plant it by division, first, each year in March to April, take out its tuberous roots, then separate the roots, and each root must have 2 to 4 terminal buds, otherwise it cannot grow into a new plant. After that, apply plant ash to the cut areas to help the wounds heal, then plant them and water them. In this way, small shoots can grow in about a week.
2. Cutting planting
First find the side branches that were removed, and keep at least three nodes on each branch. When taking cuttings, let two nodes remain underground and one node remain above the ground. At the same time, after taking cuttings, be sure to keep the soil moist and the air humid so that they can root as early as possible.
3. Seed planting
After harvesting the seeds each autumn, you can choose to sow them in March to April of the following year. After sowing, cover them with a thin layer of soil, then water them. In about a week or so, small shoots will grow, and at this time be sure to prevent strong light exposure.
