How to Grow and Care for Woody Crabapple (Malus) Flowers: Methods and Precautions
1. Light
The woody crabapple is a sun-loving flowering plant, so its growth cannot be sustained without light. If it is grown in a dark, lightless environment, it will not take long for abnormal growth to appear: not only will the branches and leaves grow leggy and the leaves turn dull and lusterless, but it will also be very difficult for it to bloom, and even if it does bloom, the flowers will be small and dull and simply not worth viewing. Therefore, it is best to grow it in a spot with fairly abundant sunlight.
2. Temperature
It is not very sensitive to cold, and under normal circumstances it can overwinter outdoors. However, if the outdoor temperature drops below -15°C, it may still suffer frost damage, and at that point it should be moved indoors.
3. Watering
It prefers fairly moist soil conditions, but it cannot grow in soil with standing water. Watering should be adjusted according to the condition of the soil: water when the soil is dry, and do not water when it is not dry.
4. Fertilizing
In spring, its growth is fairly vigorous and it needs relatively more nutrients, so an additional round of organic fertilizer is needed to provide it with sufficient nutrition; in autumn, after the leaves fall, an additional round of organic fertilizer is needed to replenish the nutrients consumed by its flowering and fruiting.
