Reasons Why Bougainvillea Only Grows Leaves and Does Not Bloom, and How to Fix It

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
There are many reasons why bougainvillea only grows leaves and does not bloom: if it is caused by insufficient light, you need to increase light exposure and let it receive 8 hours of sunlight. If it is caused by insufficient growing space, you need to change it into a flower pot suited to the size of the plant. If it is caused by improper water and fertilizer management, you need to water less before flowering and apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. If it is caused by overly dense branches, you need to thin out the branches in time.

1. Increase Light

Cause: Bougainvillea can tolerate high temperatures. If the usual care environment is too dark, its leaf color will fade, and it may also drop leaves and fail to bloom.

Solution: Appropriately increase the light duration, and let it receive at least 8 hours of sunlight every day. Normally it can be kept on a sunny balcony for care.

2. Repot in Time

Cause: The root system of bougainvillea is very well developed, and it also grows quickly. If it is not repotted, its roots will have difficulty growing normally, which will cause the situation of only growing leaves and not blooming.

Solution: According to its growth condition, promptly change it into a flower pot suited to the size of the plant, and try to repot in spring. If the plant grows very quickly, it can be repotted twice a year.

3. Control Water and Increase Fertilizer

Cause: If too much water is given before flowering, it will affect flower bud differentiation; in addition, if too much nitrogen fertilizer is applied, it will also lead to no flowering or few flowers.

Solution: Reduce watering shortly before it blooms, and you can wait until the leaves are about to wilt before watering. Usually apply less nitrogen fertilizer and more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, which helps the plant bloom better.

4. Prune the Branches

Cause: During the growth period of bougainvillea, if the branches are too dense, they will consume more nutrients. If they are not pruned in time, it will affect flower bud differentiation, and it will be difficult for it to bloom.

Solution: During growth, promptly thin out branches that are too densely grown, and cut off diseased branches and dead branches as well.
