There's a lovely succulent plant at home, grown for several years now; it started from a single cut stem, but it grew fast, lush and green, covered in rose-red flowers, and I fell for it for no particular reason. Because this flower doesn't need much care and isn't fussy, it has settled in at my home for the long term.

Its blooming season runs from spring to autumn; you can enjoy both the flowers and the foliage, making it one of the finest potted flowers for decorating the living room or windowsill

Propagating it is very simple, generally by cuttings: cut a mature stem, insert it into prepared potting soil, place it in a cool, ventilated spot, and keep the soil slightly moist; after a few days you'll see the stem standing upright, which means the new stem has begun to root and grow, and one cutting becomes a whole patch, fully satisfying your visual enjoyment. This flower is the heartleaf ice plant (Aptenia cordifolia)

Edible chuanxinlian (heartleaf ice plant) is not the same thing as the medicinal chuanxinlian (Andrographis paniculata); edible chuanxinlian has only recently become popular in vegetable markets and is a southern vegetable. Look closely and you'll find that the cut end of the edible chuanxinlian stem really does have a core running through it, which is quite interesting. Put a leaf in your mouth and chew it slowly and carefully: there's not much of an odd taste, just a slight green flavor, whereas the medicinal kind of chuanxinlian tastes bitter as soon as it enters your mouth and can only be used as medicine.

Edible chuanxinlian is rich in vitamin C, folic acid, carotene, potassium, magnesium and more, and contains a strong antioxidant, lutein,

It has excellent health benefits for the various organs of the human body. If it reaches the liver, it can effectively eliminate excess free radicals, providing very good protection for the liver, this organ that detoxifies and eliminates toxins, and eating it in spring fits the principles of seasonal eating very well,

In addition, lutein can also prevent the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts in the eyes. For people who overuse their eyes, such as those who frequently use computers or write excessively, eating it has benefits for maintaining eyesight that cannot be underestimated. The vegetable chuanxinlian contains andrographolide, a natural anti-inflammatory and antiviral component, which has preventive and therapeutic effects on influenza and pneumonia, as well as recurrent pharyngitis, angular cheilitis, high blood pressure and cholecystitis.

At the same time, as a bitter vegetable, it can reduce internal heat. It can be made into soup or filling, but it must first be blanched to remove oxalic acid and the earthy, fishy taste.
