Been growing a snake plant for half a year and it won't send up new shoots? Rubber plant always just one bare stem with no side shoots? Lately lots of gardening friends have asked these two questions, so today Huahua has 2 tricks for you, guaranteed to get your snake plant sprouting new shoots and your rubber plant pushing out side shoots fast!

Dig out a bit of soil around the snake plant's roots, and the little shoots can split the pot open!

Many people growing snake plants will notice that their snake plant doesn't move for months, doesn't grow taller, and doesn't grow new shoots. What's going on? You might want to check the snake plant's pot.

Steps

1. Snake plants have shallow, underdeveloped roots, and many households grow them in this kind of deep pot, which is very stuffy and bad for the roots' breathing. Over time, the snake plant not only won't sprout, it may even get root rot.

2. In this case, we can dig out some of the soil from the surface of the snake plant's pot, but not too much - just enough to expose a little of the roots, about 2-3 cm deep.

3. With a little of the roots exposed at the surface, the snake plant will sprout lots of little shoots within 1 month!

4. After the little shoots come up, we put the soil we dug out back to hold them in place and keep the snake plant from leaning.

5. Snake plants are shallow-rooted plants, so during normal care, don't use a deep pot - use a shallow one. That way they sprout easily and don't get root rot.

Cut a bit of bark on the rubber plant, and new shoots will come sprouting fast - no more lonely single stem!

Many households growing rubber plants end up with a single stem, straight and tall, with no side shoots, and it easily grows crooked and top-heavy. How to fix it? Simple - grab a blade and cut a bit of bark, and it's done!

Steps

1. Find the spot where you want the rubber plant to grow side shoots, and make sure that spot has a bud point or a leaf. If the bud point you're encouraging has a leaf, pluck the leaf off.

2. About 0.5-1 cm above the bud point you're encouraging, use sharp garden shears or a blade to make two horizontal cuts. The length of the cuts is about half the circumference of the branch, the depth goes roughly to the xylem under the bark, and the distance between the two cuts is about 0.2 cm.

3. After about 1 month, the bud point below the cuts will sprout.

4. Notching the rubber plant blocks the flow of nutrients, suppresses growth of the upper branches, and encourages the lower bud points to sprout. This way, the rubber plant won't be a single straight stem, but will grow multiple side branches, forming a beautiful umbrella-like shape!
