Bougainvillea blooms are very beautiful, and many flower lovers also call it "leaf flower." Indeed, the petals of bougainvillea look very much like its leaves, just different in color. It is said that the flowering period of bougainvillea runs from late spring all the way to late autumn, and of course this is also true, but there are always flower lovers whose bougainvillea will not bloom during this flowering period.

If a bougainvillea plant has reached flowering age and still does not bloom, it has a lot to do with inadequate fertilization, so it is recommended that after the beginning of spring each year you give bougainvillea monopotassium phosphate to promote flower bud development. Even so, if you have supplemented the plant with monopotassium phosphate and still see no flower buds, then it must be a problem with pruning, light and ventilation. As long as you do these three steps, bougainvillea will bloom all over the branches.

It should be emphasized here that if you want to see bougainvillea bloom, it must be at least 2 years old or more before it can possibly flower; plants freshly propagated from cuttings for one or two years are very unlikely to bloom. At the same time, plant flowering is also controlled by many combined factors: nutrition, temperature, light, pruning and ventilation. So if you have supplemented bougainvillea with phosphorus fertilizer and it still does not bloom, immediately do the following 3 steps, and the flowering period will arrive.

Prune the branches:

For flowering plants, regular and reasonable pruning of branches is very important, and the timing of pruning also matters. Improper pruning will cause the plant to lose flower buds and fail to bloom normally; pruning too late will cause the plant to grow leggy, producing only leaves and no flowers.

Regarding pruning, when bougainvillea does not bloom in summer, you need to prune the terminal buds to eliminate apical dominance and promote the growth of lateral buds, so that the branches sprout flower buds; you also need to prune leggy branches, as leggy branches are very unlikely to bloom. Just prune from the top of the branch down to the point of two leaves, but before pruning you must observe whether there are flower buds at the top of the branch. If there are, do not cut them off at all, because if you cut them, it definitely will not bloom.

Proper light:

Bougainvillea is a plant that likes light, but the light must be reasonable. Too strong light will inhibit flower bud development, so even if pruning and fertilization are done very well, it will not bloom; conversely, too strong light will burn the flower buds. Therefore, in a season like this, it is correct to place bougainvillea outdoors for care, but you should provide appropriate shade, especially at noon, and must not let the plant be exposed to direct sun. Sufficient scattered light is enough.

Increase ventilation:

If you want bougainvillea to bloom, good ventilation conditions are essential. Increasing ventilation for the plant and improving the air circulation around it can help the flowering period arrive earlier. It is generally recommended that flower lovers who have the conditions place it outdoors for care, which is best of all. If caring for it indoors, place it on a well-ventilated balcony.
