Asparagus fern (Asparagus setaceus) is also called the bamboo of elegance, and it is a very popular household plant. Some flower lovers say: the asparagus fern itself carries a scholarly air, making it suitable for growing in a study or office to set off the mood. The asparagus fern is lovely, but many flower lovers easily run into all sorts of problems when caring for it, and yellow leaves on asparagus fern are a common phenomenon. There are many causes of yellow leaves on asparagus fern: yellow leaves caused by too much fertilizer leading to fertilizer burn, yellow leaves caused by too much watering, yellow leaves caused by blazing sun, yellow leaves caused by root rot, yellow leaves caused by iron deficiency in the plant, and so on.

What I want to share today is asparagus fern turning yellow all over the pot because of iron deficiency. Many flower lovers mistakenly think that when the whole pot of asparagus fern turns yellow, it is dead. In fact, this is a state of false death. Trim off the yellow leaves, supplement the plant with ferrous sulfate, and two weeks later you will see emerald green new shoots.

So how do you tell whether asparagus fern yellow leaves are caused by iron deficiency? When the new leaves of the asparagus fern are obviously yellowing, the old leaves are slightly yellowing, and the leaf tissue is yellow while the veins are green, you can tell the plant has an iron deficiency. For this situation, the asparagus fern needs 1 snip plus "1 spoonful of feed", and it will soon grow new shoots.

Pruning:

When yellow leaves appear on the asparagus fern, first trim off all the yellow leaves. In particular, although the old leaves still have a trace of green, the old leaves basically will not turn green again, and they do not look good growing in the pot, so just snip them off with one cut!

Fertilizing:

When iron-deficiency yellow leaves appear on the asparagus fern, you naturally need to supplement the plant with iron. I recommend using ferrous sulfate, mixed with water at a ratio of 1:500 and watered on, once a week; two waterings are basically enough to top it up. At the same time, ferrous sulfate not only supplements iron, it can also acidify the soil, which suits the growth of asparagus fern.

When fertilizing, there is one thing to note: ferrous sulfate oxidizes extremely easily. After mixing with water, if the solution is pale green, pour it into the plant right away; if you see the solution turn rust-yellow, it means the iron has already oxidized, and such a solution has lost its effect, with the iron-supplementing effect no longer obvious, so it is best to mix a fresh batch and fertilize again. So when fertilizing, mix with water quickly and pour the fertilizer quickly, to avoid it oxidizing into an ineffective fertilizer.
