If you have scattered free time, growing a few pots of the vegetables you eat often on the balcony can enrich your weekends, improve your growing skills, and let you grow vigorous, beautiful vegetables so your family can eat what you have grown, with a real sense of achievement. How do you grow chives in flower pots so they grow vigorously, grow strong, and keep producing harvest after harvest?

Methods and tips for growing chives at home

For the soil for growing chives, whether it is garden soil dug up from outside or leaf mold, both can be used to grow chives. It is not fussy about soil, just add more fertilizer to it, as chives love fertilizer.

Choose a long trough-shaped pot with a slightly larger diameter, or a round pot, at least 20 cm deep, so the chives grow sturdy, and one harvest is enough to stir-fry a plate, enough to eat.

You can sow chives directly from chive seeds, but germination takes a bit of time, so you can just use chive roots to plant them, which is both simple and fast. About a month after planting, the chives have grown out. Then they can be harvested and eaten. Dig a few holes in the pot, with about six chives per hole. Space each hole about 10 cm apart.

If you want chives to grow vigorously, they need plenty of sun, otherwise the chives grow thin and tend to become leggy. In summer, place them in a semi-shaded spot, reduce the number of harvests, and store nutrient energy for the autumn chives. Water whenever you see the potting soil is dry.

Only with fertile soil and sufficient fertilizer can chives grow lush. After planting, they need frequent fertilizing. Whether it is soybean cake fertilizer, chicken manure fertilizer, sheep manure fertilizer, cow manure, and so on, organic fertilizers, apply fertilizer once every so often.

After every harvest of chives, be sure to apply fertilizer once. Whether it is plant ash, cake fertilizer, or adding a bit of leaf mold, it will grow like crazy.

When chives reach five or six years old, their vigorous growth period has passed, so you need to dig the roots out again and replant them, or replant with chive roots again. That way you can eat your own homegrown chives all year round. Chives are a very easy potted vegetable to grow; with ordinary, rough care, you can still get a harvest.
