Lewisia is often also called Liuweicao; it originates mainly from the midwestern United States, its flowers are white, and many gardens in our country are introducing Lewisia for planting, while in recent years more people have chosen to grow Lewisia in pots. Cultivating Lewisia is not a particularly easy matter, and there are many points to pay attention to, such as pruning, fertilizing, watering, air humidity and so on. Let's look below at what measures should specifically be taken.

I. Soil

One of the reasons Lewisia is not easy to grow is that choosing its potting soil is not so simple. Since Lewisia's flower production is at an average level, this easily gives people the false impression that choosing ordinary soil can also cultivate Lewisia well. In fact, it is exactly the opposite: if relatively poor soil is used to plant Lewisia, its growth rate is very slow, and even if other aspects of daily management are done well, it still cannot grow and develop properly.

Therefore, the potting soil for Lewisia should be deep, highly fertile garden soil or sandy soil, so as to ensure that Lewisia can grow quickly during the seedling stage.

II. Watering

Compared with Lewisia's flowers, its leaves have a relatively high demand for water. In spring and autumn, watering about 2 times a week is sufficient; the weather at this time is relatively cool, and watering only needs to avoid water accumulating in the potting soil. If it is in the hot summer, do not increase the amount of watering, but reduce it somewhat, because the weather at this time is relatively hot and humid, and it is suitable to keep the soil dry; if the amount of watering is increased, it easily causes the plant's leaves to drop and affects its normal growth.

III. Fertilizing

Lewisia blooms relatively frequently during its flowering period, so reasonable fertilizing is very important for Lewisia's blooming. Its flowering period is from June to October each year, and starting in May, the plant needs topdressing, preferably 2 times a month, until Lewisia's flowering period ends. At the same time, fertilizing is no longer the same as in the seedling stage, adding fertilizer mainly based on nitrogen fertilizer, but instead switching to applying organic fertilizer mainly based on phosphorus fertilizer, which also helps extend Lewisia's flowering period.

IV. Pruning

Pruning of Lewisia is generally divided into two stages. One stage is during the growth period; at this time Lewisia can absorb sufficient nutrients, and the differentiation and growth of branches can be ensured, so the plant's branches may become too long or too dense. Properly shortening and thinning this type of branches and leaves can ensure that it grows more smoothly.

The other period is after its flowering period ends. In order to ensure that the plant blooms smoothly the following year, certain pruning should also be carried out after flowering. At this time, pruning mainly targets branches such as residual branches, spent flowers and weak branches. Cutting away the aged branches means the plant will also grow more robust new branches in the coming spring.
