This vegetable is very easy to grow. It comes alive as soon as it touches soil, it can be grown in even the smallest flower pot, and one planting gives you five years of harvests.

When it comes to growing vegetables in pots at home, many people think only of scallions, ginger and garlic, and of course these are all great vegetables. Beyond these, we can actually also grow some garlic chives, and you can grow them from just the roots, in a big pot or a small pot: cut them and they grow again, and one planting gives you five years of harvests.
Some people sow garlic chive seeds, but this grows too slowly and the survival rate is not high. Planting directly from the roots gives a high survival rate and fast growth, and they are soon ready for the table.
There are no special requirements for the container used to grow garlic chives; for example, clay pots, ceramic pots, plastic pots and foam boxes are all fine, but a flower pot that looks good, is light in texture, and drains and breathes well is preferable. When growing vegetables at home, it is best to put a tray under the flower pot to prevent water from seeping out and running everywhere.
Preparation in advance
If you want your garlic chives to grow thick and strong, before planting we need to prepare some compound fertilizer. First mix the fertilizer with the soil, turn the soil over, and then plant.
Planting method
Garlic chives can be grown in a big pot or a small pot, and they will survive either way, but if you are using a small pot you need to plant fewer: just a few plants per pot. The exact number depends on the size of your flower pot. Space each plant about 5 cm apart. After planting, finally fill in the soil, and once planting is complete, water thoroughly once.
Planting precautions
Because garlic chives have very poor ability to break through the soil, if they are completely buried, they will very likely die. So when planting, you must leave a little of the top showing above the surface, which can raise the survival rate.
Care precautions
Fertilize once before planting. Afterwards, every time you cut the garlic chives you must fertilize once. Water when the soil is dry and let it dry out between waterings, watering about once every 4-5 days. Never water every day, or the roots will rot and the plants will die.
Generally, when most of the garlic chive leaves have grown to 18-20 cm, they can be harvested, roughly once every 15 days, about 30 times a year. After cutting, water and top-dress with fertilizer promptly, otherwise the next crop of garlic chives will not grow well. As long as they are handled properly, the garlic chive roots can keep growing and be harvested for several years.
