Because of its extremely high ornamental value, ease of care, very strong reproductive capacity, and bright and beautiful flowers that people love, the Christmas cactus is one of the common flowering plants in homes. Its value lies in its relatively long blooming period, which gives it high ornamental value.

The Christmas cactus has a relatively long blooming period, from October to February of the following year. If the blooming period is managed well, it can bloom continuously.

The following points need attention during the blooming period

1. Light

The Christmas cactus is a short-day plant and cannot grow flower buds under long-day conditions. If the temperature is too high, such as in midsummer, it will be forced into a dormant state.

Do not place potted plants in a place with artificial light at night, because the extra light will affect the plant's flower bud differentiation and subsequent blooming.

If you want to advance the blooming period, you can shade the plant at the end of July and the beginning of August, covering it with a black cloth from 4 pm to 8 am the next day. By late September, small flower buds can form at the top of each stem segment. Continue shading until the end of September, and from the beginning of October, its buds can open.

2. Temperature

The Christmas cactus is relatively sensitive to temperature and grows well within the range of 16 to 28°C. When the temperature is below 13°C, the flowers of the Christmas cactus are no longer affected by the photoperiod and can develop normally; when the temperature is above 15°C, flower bud differentiation of the Christmas cactus can only proceed under short-day conditions; when the temperature is above 21°C, the plant cannot undergo flower bud differentiation regardless of whether conditions are long-day or short-day.

3. Watering

Water the Christmas cactus according to the principle of "do not water if not dry, and water thoroughly when watering."

For a Christmas cactus in its vigorous growth period, we can slightly increase the amount of watering, keeping the soil slightly moist. For a Christmas cactus in the bud-setting period, frequently spray water on the leaves and around them, as this can promote full blooming and make the flowers bloom better.

The above is the editor's introduction to the blooming period of the Christmas cactus and the points to note. I hope the editor's sharing is helpful for your cultivation of the Christmas cactus.
