The money tree (Pachira aquatica) is a classic foliage plant, with broad leaves that stay green all year round. Growing one at home adds a distinctive touch of color to your living space. On top of that, the money tree is believed to bring wealth and prosperity, which is why it is so widely loved. But many plant lovers say that while caring for a money tree, it tends to wilt very easily, and in most cases this is caused by root rot. Below is a detailed guide on how to bring it back from the dead.

Causes of Root Rot in Money Trees

Although the money tree likes a moist environment, watering it frequently makes the soil stay wet for long periods, so the roots cannot breathe properly. Add a stuffy, poorly ventilated environment on top of that, and the money tree's leaves will turn yellow and eventually the plant will die outright from root rot.

How to Deal with Root Rot

First, take the money tree out of its pot, then clean the soil off the roots; you can rinse them directly with water. Next, cut off the rotted roots with a knife, and you can trim away some of the old roots as well. However, the knife must be sterilized with alcohol beforehand, otherwise the roots can easily become infected with bacteria.

Once the roots are trimmed, soak them in carbendazim for half an hour to disinfect them. After disinfecting, put the money tree in a cool, well-ventilated place to dry. Once it has dried, apply an appropriate amount of rooting powder to the roots and repot it. It will basically grow new roots in about 7 days.

How to Care for It After Repotting

After repotting, place the money tree in a cool, well-ventilated environment first, otherwise the root growth will be hindered. You can wait until the roots have grown well before returning to normal care. Also, in future care, be sure to water less; you can wait until the soil looks slightly pale before watering it again.
