Introduction

Potted greenery is an essential decorative touch for home life. Keeping some flowers and plants at home has many benefits: it beautifies your living space and lifts your mood. "Huasheng Potted Plant Diary, Issue 1173" introduces you to the easiest herbaceous plant to grow.

Today's Star

Herbaceous flowers are often either afraid of heat or afraid of cold. For example, succulents struggle through summer, and Eustoma grandiflorum (prairie gentian) and others fear the cold. Flower lovers often ask: Is this flower afraid of cold in winter? Can it be grown in the north? The flower introduced today is both heat-resistant and cold-tolerant, and in northern regions it can even be grown outdoors through the winter. This flower is called Dianthus chinensis var. heddewigii (large-flowered Chinese pink), the easiest herbaceous flower I have ever seen to grow. It blooms in summer too, and in winter it often stays green without dropping its leaves.

Large-flowered Chinese pink

Large-flowered Chinese pink, also known as long-bracted pink, three-veined pink, China pink, and others, is a perennial herbaceous plant and a close relative of the famous "Mother's Day flower," the carnation. It originates from northern China and grows only 30-50 cm tall. Its flowers are somewhat larger than those of ordinary Chinese pink, borne singly at the ends of the branches, or several flowers forming a cyme. The flower colors are brilliant and varied: purplish red, pink, bright red, or white, and so on. Planted in groups, the ornamental effect is excellent.

A very long flowering period

Large-flowered Chinese pink has a very long flowering period. Under suitable conditions and with proper care, it can bloom in all four seasons, and it opens in multi-headed clusters packed densely together. When it blooms, it covers a large area at once, and "bursting the pot" with flowers is easy. It is a very good groundcover and flowerbed ornamental flower. Along both sides of the park road below my home, this flower is planted everywhere. Its flowering period begins in spring and has continued right up to now, and it is still blooming. Looking at it, I am even starting to feel a bit of aesthetic fatigue.

Super easy to grow

Large-flowered Chinese pink is originally a kind of "wild grass" that grows throughout China. Its vitality is extremely tenacious, truly "wildfire cannot burn it all up; the spring wind blows and it grows again." It was only developed into an ornamental flower because it is beautiful. Growing it in household pots is even easier. Scatter the seeds in the ground, and a patch will soon grow. It has low requirements for fertilizer and water; just water a little when the potting soil dries out, and it can grow well even without fertilizer. It is extremely cold-tolerant, and growing it outdoors in Northeast China is no problem either.

Gives you a sea of flowers

Large-flowered Chinese pink is generally grown from seed. It is a perennial root plant: plant it once, and thereafter you will have flowers to enjoy every year. It self-sows strongly; after the flowers fade, the seeds it sets fall to the ground and grow naturally, quickly forming a patch. When it blooms, it can give you a sea of flowers. It is very suitable for growing in a courtyard, and of course it is also an excellent potted plant. Its flower colors are brilliant, it blooms easily and bursts the pot, and placed on a balcony or in an office, it always stands out.
