For friends who love growing vegetables, it would be nice to have a small yard or a plot of land. But as long as you have a balcony or a small terrace at home, you can grow lots of vegetables even without flower pots. If you can't find containers for growing vegetables, take a look in the kitchen and outside, and you can easily collect a whole pile of empty oil drums and empty oil jugs. These are absolutely perfect for growing vegetables, very convenient and practical.

Methods and tips for growing vegetables in empty oil jugs and oil drums

Rinse the collected empty oil drums clean with water. Generally, oil drums that have held cooking oil are fairly clean, and a rinse with water leaves no stains.

Cut off the top part with a pair of scissors, and poke a few small holes in the bottom with an iron nail. Fill with leaf mold soil or fertile soil and you can grow vegetables.

Another way to cut is to cut the empty oil drum open from the middle, splitting it into two halves, turning it into two rectangular flower-pot shapes. Drill holes in the bottom, fill with loose, breathable soil, and you can use it to grow vegetables.

If you're growing peppers or tomatoes, one oil drum is enough for at most one plant; planting more will crowd them and the nutrient supply won't keep up.

When planting, add some farmyard manure to the soil, or animal manures such as chicken manure, sheep manure or cow manure as a base fertilizer.

During the vigorous growth period, before flowering, apply a top dressing once a month. Any well-rotted organic fertilizer will do; dilute it with water and pour it on. The vegetables grow more and more vigorously.

In late summer and early autumn, plant a few garlic sprouts in an oil drum. Garlic sprouts germinate very quickly, sprouting within a week; cut the garlic sprouts off to eat, and they'll grow another crop.

Plant one cucumber in an oil drum, and when it flowers and sets fruit, give it plenty of water and fertilizer. It can keep producing for several months.

Empty oil jugs can also be used to grow strawberries. Plant a few strawberry plants in one drum. Strawberries are relatively easy to care for: as long as the soil is fertile, there's no waterlogging, and you fertilize often, they'll bear lots of fruit.

You can also grow small leafy greens and sweet potatoes in empty oil jugs; both are very suitable. The root growth is clear at a glance, watering is very convenient, and the vegetables at home grow faster than you can eat them, with a harvest every day.
