Fruit is what we eat most of in daily life, it is indispensable every day, but fruit is a bit expensive. If you have a large terrace, a big balcony, or a rooftop platform, you can absolutely grow one yourself. These two fruits are very suitable for growing in pots at home, passion fruit and fig; a single branch is enough to grow them, and the fruit will cover the branches, delicious and nutritious.

How to grow passion fruit and tips

There are two ways. One is sowing seeds. When eating passion fruit, pick out the seeds, then rinse them clean with water. Find a yogurt container or a paper cup to use as a seedling box, drill a small hole in the bottom, and fill it with soil. Or you can just sow directly in a small flower pot.

After sowing, water to keep moist, then place it in a spot with bright indirect light and good air circulation; in a little over a week, sprouts will appear.

When it has three true leaves, just remove the seedling box and transplant it into a large flower pot. Be careful to protect the roots, and plant it into the new pot together with the soil.

The other method is cuttings, which root very easily. Use a one-year-old or older passion fruit branch, about 20 cm long, with two or three growth nodes.

Stick it directly into airy, moist soil, shade it and keep it moist; usually it will root in a month and gradually grow new leaves.

When the root system is well developed, you can transplant it with some of the old soil into a large container; one plant per pot is enough.

When the seedling grows to 30 cm, you can set up a trellis for it to climb, and then just wait to enjoy the flowers, the fruit, and the harvest.

How to grow figs and tips

From relatives or friends who have grown them, cut a healthy, sturdy branch, about 20 cm long, with at least two buds. Soak it in potassium permanganate or another sterilising solution to disinfect it.

Prepare a small flower pot and fill it with pure sand, or peat moss plus vermiculite, etc., all work.

You can also use a larger paper cup, plastic cup, or drink bottle with the top part removed, then fill it with soil and insert the cutting.

After inserting the cutting, press it down gently and place it in a shaded, airy spot. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged; in a little under a month, roots will gradually grow.

As the roots grow more and more, you can take the seedling out of the drink bottle with its soil and plant it directly into a larger, deeper flower pot.

Apply some base fertiliser, water thoroughly after planting, and place it in an airy spot without strong sunlight. After about ten days or so, you can water and sun it normally and care for it as usual.

This way you can also grow figs with a decent harvest at home. When ripe, the fruit is especially sweet.
