Snake plant (Sansevieria) is a classic low-maintenance plant that can be placed in the bedroom or living room. It not only decorates the space but also absorbs harmful gases from the air, making it a very common houseplant. So in the hot summer, how should we care for snake plants? Caring for snake plants is actually very simple - just do the following few things

1. Soil

First of all, the soil must be loose and breathable, because the snake plant's root system is not very developed. It does have a main root, but it mainly relies on some fibrous roots to absorb nutrients and supply the main root's growth. Its fibrous roots have no ability to penetrate deep, so if the soil is not breathable, the roots cannot spread out and cannot absorb nutrients, and the snake plant will certainly not grow well. When mixing soil for snake plants, we can use half leaf mold, half river sand, and mix in a little native soil. This kind of soil is very loose and breathable, which is good for the snake plant's roots to penetrate deep, so the snake plant will grow very well

2. Watering

Snake plants like warm and dry environments, so do not water them frequently. Snake plants are very drought-tolerant - they will not even die if you do not water them for several months, so they are a classic low-maintenance plant. But spring and autumn are their peak growing seasons, and they also grow very fast in summer. During this period, do not let them lack water. When the soil dries out completely, water it thoroughly straight away, and the snake plant will grow very fast

3. Fertilizing

Snake plants grow very fast during the growing season, so fertilizing must keep up. Its leaves are very thick and fleshy, so the fertilizer should be mainly nitrogen and potassium fertilizer, which can make the leaves grow fast and thick. For fertilizer, you can use homemade rice-washing water, or bury a few cooked soybeans at the edge of the pot, or use purchased compound fertilizer or a high-nitrogen, high-potassium water-soluble fertilizer diluted at a 1:1000 ratio, applying small amounts frequently. The fertilizer must never be too concentrated. This way the snake plant grows fast, the leaves are thick and fleshy, and with sufficient nutrients, it will send up many small side shoots - chubby little pups - which is especially satisfying

4. Light

Snake plants like light but are afraid of direct sunlight, so when giving them light, they can be kept in a semi-shaded environment. This is especially true for the golden-edged snake plant - the yellow edges on its leaves have no chlorophyll, so they sunburn very easily. When caring for snake plants in summer, they can get one to two hours of light each day, and the snake plant will still grow very fast
