Control Techniques for the Soybean Pod Borer

The soybean pod borer (Leguminivora glycinivorella) is an oligophagous pest that mainly damages soybeans, common beans and similar crops. The larvae bore and feed inside the pods, and in severe infestations they hollow out the seeds.

Chemical control should be applied after the larvae hatch but before they bore into the pods. Suitable pesticides include 10% imidacloprid wettable powder at 1000-1500 times dilution, 50% fenitrothion at 1000 times dilution, 52% Nongdile at 1000 times dilution, 90% crystal trichlorfon soluble powder at 1000 times dilution, 0.36% Baicao No. 1 emulsifiable concentrate at 800-1000 times dilution, and 0.6% Miechongling emulsifiable concentrate at 2000-2500 times dilution. Legume crops are sensitive to dichlorvos, so it must not be used, to avoid causing phytotoxicity.
