What are the precautions for carrot cultivation?
I. Site selection and land preparation:
1. Choose a previous crop for rotation; it is best not to grow carrots in successive years, and the previous crop is best a legume crop such as peanuts.
2. For site selection and subsoiling, choose sandy loam soil with good drainage, deep soil layer, and convenient drainage and irrigation. After the previous crop is harvested, carry out subsoiling at the appropriate time, generally at a depth of 12—15cm, with a subsoiling depth of more than 30cm.
3. For land preparation and fertilization, spring land preparation is the main approach. Before harrowing, apply 4000—5000 kg of fully decomposed high-quality farmyard manure per 667 sq m (1 mu). After harrowing, promptly form ridges to preserve soil moisture, with a ridge width of 65cm. When forming ridges, apply 10—15 kg of compound fertilizer deeply.
II. Variety selection and treatment
1. For variety selection, according to the local production and ecological condition type and market demand, select excellent varieties with suitable maturity period, high yield, and good quality according to local conditions, such as conventional five-inch, six-inch, hybrid carrot and other high-quality varieties.
2. For seed selection, new seeds should be used. Before sowing, they must be selected to remove grass seeds and impurities, so that the seed purity reaches 95%, the purity reaches 90%, the germination rate reaches 80%, and the quality reaches grade two.
3. For seed treatment, sun the seeds for 2 days before sowing. After rubbing off the seed hairs, pour the seeds into 40℃ water and soak for 2 hours. Remove and drain the water, then place them at 20—25℃ to germinate for 3—4 days. When the seeds show white, they can be sown.
III. Timely sowing. The sowing period should be determined according to the variety's characteristics, natural conditions, and the local expected harvest period for carrots. Generally, it is from June 15—20. Generally speaking, do not exceed August. According to soil moisture, sow in double rows on the ridge at the appropriate time, with a sowing depth of 2cm, and cover soil immediately after sowing. Keep 20,000 seedlings per 667 sq m, with a seeding rate of 250-300 grams.
