Q: What are the daily management requirements for rice field eel (Monopterus albus) cage culture?
A: For rice field eels raised in deep-water soil-free cages, removing leftover feed and clearing out dead eels are both relatively difficult. For this reason, the "push-and-shift method" should be used for management.
The "push-and-shift method" means slowly pushing the floating rafts of aquatic plants at one end of the cage toward the other end, so that the floating rafts of aquatic plants at both ends of the cage merge at one end. This leaves a blank water surface area of 1/3 of the cage at one end, making operations easier. If the other end needs to be worked on, the merged floating rafts of aquatic plants can be slowly pushed back toward the other end. If the middle section needs to be inspected, the merged rafts can be separated again so that the two rafts each return to their original positions. By pushing and shifting in this way, the entire cage can be inspected or managed in rotation.
For cages used in pond culture, the water level should be kept stable. In summer, pay attention to heat protection for the rice field eels; the water level should not be too shallow, to prevent excessively high water temperature from affecting growth.
