What are the differences between raw and sterilized substrates for edible mushrooms?
Sterilized substrate: In substitute-material cultivation, the cultivation process in which the substrate is treated with moist heat sterilization before being inoculated with edible mushroom mycelium is called sterilized-substrate cultivation.
Raw substrate: The cultivation process in which the substrate is not subjected to moist heat sterilization but is treated by other sterilization methods, so that the edible mushroom mycelium inoculated into the substrate can grow well while contaminating microorganisms are suppressed or killed, is called raw-substrate cultivation. Raw-substrate cultivation of edible mushrooms that relies on the natural environment is inevitably limited by natural climatic conditions (especially temperature and humidity), and thus to date it can only be carried out on log cultivation. In substitute-material cultivation, the reason it has not yet been successfully demonstrated and promoted in production is severe contamination after inoculation.
