What issues should be noted when introducing sheep breeds?
(Agricultural Wealth Network) What issues should be noted when introducing sheep breeds?
--------------------------------------
1 Adaptability to climate and environment
The production area of Small-tailed Han sheep is southwestern Shandong, located on the Yellow River alluvial plain, at an altitude of 500 m, with a suitable climate, an average annual temperature of 13.6°C, an absolute maximum temperature of 40°C, an absolute minimum temperature of -18°C, annual precipitation of 749 mm, and a frost-free period of 206 d. Because of its specific climate and environment, adaptability to climate and environment must be considered when introducing the breed. Xiao Yongli reported that the general climate in the south is hot and humid, and in the hot summer, Small-tailed Han sheep often find it difficult to adapt. In addition, if they encounter continuous rainy and humid weather, after being drenched by rain, their coarse and messy wool is very easily polluted, and wet wool is not easy to dry, often leading to reduced feeding, elevated body temperature, coughing and other cold symptoms. It is also very likely to cause mange, which spreads through the flock and is difficult to cure. Under such circumstances, Small-tailed Han sheep become ill frequently, often with acute onset, a short disease course, difficulty in curing, and high mortality. Small-tailed Han sheep show good ecological adaptability in the high-cold regions of the south (Bijie, Guizhou). According to reports from many areas where Small-tailed Han sheep have been introduced, they can also adapt fairly well in some high-altitude areas (1800-2940 m), but these reports often adopted suitable feeding methods and provided sufficient nutrition. Therefore, when introducing the breed, it is essential to consider whether the local climate and environment are suitable for raising Small-tailed Han sheep, and never introduce them blindly.

2 Introduction areas and the quality of breeding stock
After Small-tailed Han sheep fever swept the country, a considerable number of governments, collectives, individuals, and many enterprises and institutions across the country rushed to Shandong and other production areas to introduce breeding stock. This caused a substantial decrease in the number of superior breeding sheep in the production areas, creating a shortage. Under such circumstances, some individuals and collectives, driven by profit, bought many inferior sheep and crossbred sheep from outside the production areas and passed them off as superior Small-tailed Han breeding sheep for sale. Some even bought back crossbred offspring of introduced breeding sheep from areas where the breed had been introduced and sold them, and others used sheep of other breeds to impersonate Small-tailed Han sheep, causing the quality of Small-tailed Han breeding sheep to be mixed. Therefore, after introduction in many areas, it was found that the production performance of the purchased sheep was far below what was described or reported. Thus, when introducing the breed, one must introduce from the original production area or from nearby areas with high-quality germplasm. When introducing the breed, one should have a certain understanding of the appearance characteristics of Small-tailed Han sheep to avoid introducing inferior sheep of other breeds. At the same time, when introducing the breed, one should introduce from a superior Small-tailed Han breeding farm or, through the local animal husbandry management department, from farmers' households.

3 Reasonable feeding methods after introduction
In Small-tailed Han sheep production areas such as Shandong and Henan, forage and feed resources are abundant and feeding conditions are superior. Small-tailed Han sheep are raised in scattered households, using housed feeding and semi-housed feeding, with short grazing distances. Moreover, farmers often tether Small-tailed Han sheep at the edges of fields to graze while working in the fields, and lead them back when finished. Breeding rams are generally raised under housed feeding. However, after introduction in many areas, the feeding methods of the original production area were not taken into account, and grazing was adopted instead. Small-tailed Han sheep show a serious "running after green" phenomenon when grazing, often taking one bite, looking around, running a few steps, and then taking another bite. In this state, the body's nutritional energy is all consumed by "movement." The original production area of Small-tailed Han sheep is plains, and after many mountainous areas adopted grazing following introduction, because Small-tailed Han sheep have long legs and are not good at climbing slopes and ridges, they are very likely to slip and fall when grazing on mountain slopes. It can be seen that unsuitable feeding methods greatly affect the exertion of the production performance of Small-tailed Han sheep. Therefore, after introduction, reasonable feeding methods must be adopted. It is recommended to use housed feeding or semi-housed feeding. Areas with conditions can organically combine housed feeding with short-distance grazing. Mountainous areas must adopt housed feeding to avoid losses caused by unreasonable feeding methods.

4 Organization and management after introduction
Insufficient work efforts and inadequate utilization In many areas where the breed has been introduced, attention is paid only to introduction while organization and management work after introduction is neglected. Management is lax, measures are ineffective, follow-up investment is small, and necessary guidance is lacking, resulting in low utilization rates of the flock after introduction. Many reports on poor results after the introduction of Small-tailed Han sheep mention this factor. This shows the importance of follow-up management work after introduction. Therefore, after collective introduction, organization and management work must be strengthened. Through a series of effective measures, farmers should be organized to raise sheep scientifically and use them rationally, so as to achieve the expected purpose of introduction. In short, there are many issues to note in the introduction of Small-tailed Han sheep, and this article has briefly discussed this issue. Recently, Small-tailed Han sheep have entered a stage of sustained development. At present, domestic mutton sheep are in strong demand, and many areas are carrying out mutton sheep production through the introduction of Small-tailed Han sheep. It is hoped that this article can provide reference for the many households introducing the breed.
