Key Technical Points and Precautions for Assisted Lambing in Small-Tailed Han Sheep
Assisted Lambing in Small-Tailed Han Sheep
(Agricultural Wealth Network) 1. Prenatal preparation
(1) 1-2 days before lambing, keep the ewe confined in the pen for feeding or grazing nearby;
(2) Prepare the lambing room (clean it, disinfect with 20% limewater, or carbolic acid, plant ash, etc., and spread some bedding straw, etc.);
(3) Prepare the iodine tincture, washbasin, towels, medicated soap or Lysol, benzalkonium bromide, potassium permanganate, etc. to be used for assisted lambing;
(4) Make lambing plans and lambing records, etc.;
(5) 3 days before lambing, reduce the ewe's feed to the minimum, while keeping the concentrate feed as usual.
2. Assisted lambing
(1) Let the ewe lie on flat ground or on a slope higher in front and lower behind, to facilitate lambing;
(2) As the ewe strains, the person assisting lambing grasps the lamb and gently pulls it along with the straining. Then tear off the umbilical cord (about 1 cun from the belly), squeeze out the blood, disinfect with iodine tincture, and take precautions against tetanus, etc.;
(3) Let the ewe lick the lamb dry, to enhance maternal behavior and facilitate the expulsion of the afterbirth; if necessary, use clean bedding straw to help gently wipe off the large amount of mucus and fetal fluids on the lamb's body. Except for lambing in winter, spring and late autumn, when the lambing room needs to be kept warm, there is no need to light a fire for warmth at other times;
(4) Peel off the fetal hooves, let the lamb stand up, and manually assist it in taking its first milk; weigh the birth weight after half an hour;
(5) For multiparous Small-Tailed Han Sheep, the interval between the delivery of each lamb varies; it may be as short as a few minutes or as long as nearly 1 hour or more. After the last lamb is delivered, give the ewe warm water and salt water to drink, and do not let it drink cold water within five days. Gradually increase the concentrate feed until it reaches the specified amount on the 10th day, after which the amount of concentrate feed may be appropriately increased as needed;
(6) Inject the lambs with tetanus toxoid or antitoxin within 5 days.
