Efficient Utilization Techniques for Breeding Pigs to Effectively Improve Farming Benefits

Efficient Utilization of Breeding Pigs
(Agricultural Wealth Network) The length of the breeding period of breeding pigs and the quality of their reproductive performance are related to breed type, feed type, nutritional level, management measures, and utilization intensity.

After young breeding pigs begin mating and farrowing, their reproductive performance continuously improves. When they reach 2 to 3 years of age, they are at their peak reproductive capacity. After that, as age increases, sexual function gradually declines until sexual exhaustion.

Modern pig farming generally implements year-round balanced farrowing of breeding pigs, with commercial meat pigs marketed in batches. What is emphasized is cost accounting, and what is sought is the best economic benefit. This is an era of demanding money and meat from pigs. Therefore, in terms of reproduction, it is necessary to grasp the optimal breeding stage for intensive utilization, and promptly cull breeding pigs when reproductive performance declines.

Reproductive Characteristics of Breeding Pigs

The advantages of young and prime-aged breeding pigs are: boars aged 1 to 3 years have strong libido, fast sexual reflexes, good semen quality, high conception rates, agile bodies, strong limbs, and fewer limb and hoof diseases; young and prime-aged sows from parity 1 to 6 have obvious estrus symptoms, high conception rates, many and robust piglets, strong piglet vitality, fast growth and development, high consecutive farrowing performance, and strong nursing ability.

The disadvantages of old breeding pigs are: decreased reproductive performance. Old breeding boars have poor libido, slow sexual reflexes, heavy and clumsy bodies (large breeds can reach over 3504 kg), inflexible limbs often accompanied by limb and hoof diseases, and poor mating ability. Although old sows may farrow a fair number of piglets, their nursing ability is poor, and some individuals often have little or no milk. They are also large and clumsy and prone to crushing and stepping on piglets. Their abdominal muscles are slack, and when lying on their side to nurse, the 2 to 3 teats on the lower rear row are very difficult to expose. Without human assistance, newborn piglets have great difficulty accessing milk. In addition, the offspring bred by old breeding pigs have poorer viability and slow growth and development, and undesirable offspring individuals often appear due to gene mutations.

Problems in the Utilization of Breeding Pigs

In modern pig farming, young and prime-aged breeding pigs are mostly used. Generally, breeding boars are used for 2 to 3 years, and breeding sows are used until parity 5 to 6. Individuals with excellent reproductive performance can be used until parity 7 to 8. In this way, the culling and replacement rate of breeding pigs is relatively large, mostly maintained between 25% and 35%. Therefore, first, it increases the cost of raising replacement breeding pigs; second, because the proportion of sows at parity 1 to 2 in the sow herd increases, it affects the production performance of the pig herd.

Solutions

Obtain the raising cost of replacement breeding pigs from the improvement of overall economic benefits; strengthen the raising of replacement breeding pigs to improve the reproductive capacity of sows at parity 1 to 2; use comprehensive technical measures to improve the level of pig farming production and make rational use of breeding pigs.
