Key Points for Heat Prevention and Cooling in Pig Farming During the Dog Days of Summer
(Agricultural Wealth Network) 1. Shade and washing for cooling. Pig farming in rural areas mostly uses open-style pig pens, so a temporary shade awning should be set up in front of the pen to block direct sunlight. Shelters can also be built around the pen, or vines such as grapes and pumpkins can be planted and allowed to climb all over the shade structure. Cool water can also be used to wash the ground and walls inside the pen to lower the temperature. Where tap water is available, connect a hose and wash several times a day; where there is no tap water, use basins to carry water and wash the ground, so as to lower the pen temperature.

II. Feed pigs at night. Feeding times can be at 7 p.m., 11 p.m., and 4 a.m., with 3 feedings each night. During the day, at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., feed each time 0.5% salt water and green, juicy feed. As long as feeding is reasonable and needs are met, pigs weighing about 50 kg can still achieve a daily weight gain of 0.5-0.75 kg.

III. Use water to wash the pigs' bodies for cooling. (1) Use spraying or showering to wash the pigs' bodies 2-4 times a day to help the pigs dissipate heat. (2) Freshly drawn well water is relatively low in temperature, so it can be left in sunlight for a while before being used to wash the pigs' bodies. This can both dissipate heat and cool them down, and also keep the pigs' bodies clean and hygienic. (3) When washing the pigs' bodies with water, this should be arranged before feeding. Washing is not allowed within 30 minutes after feeding, and water must not be suddenly used to wash the pigs' heads, in order to prevent severe constriction of the blood vessels in the pigs' heads and shock.

IV. Bathing for cooling. A shallow pool can be built in one corner of the pig pen and filled with clean water so that the pigs can soak in the pool at any time, promoting body heat loss. If the pen is small and there is no condition to dig a pool, a pool can be dug nearby, and every so often in the afternoon, let the pigs out and allow them to turn over freely and soak for 10-20 minutes.

V. Heat prevention through feed. (1) Vinegar or pickled cabbage juice. It can be given orally each time, with the amount increased or decreased according to the pig's body size. (2) White hyacinth bean. White hyacinth bean has the effect of relieving summer heat and strengthening the stomach. Depending on the pig's body weight, 20-50 grams can be used, boiled into a decoction to drink the liquid. (3) Mung bean soup. Take an appropriate amount of mung beans, add 20 times the water, and boil until the skins split. After cooling, drink the soup and eat the beans. (4) Watermelon rind. Use 2000 grams of fresh watermelon rind, mash it, add 100 grams of white sugar, and mix. Give once every other day.
