How to raise Boer goats well?
(Agricultural Wealth Network) How to raise Boer goats well?
--------------------------------------
1. To build a pollution-free pasture for Boer goats, it should be built in an area with no pollution sources nearby and where environmental indices such as air, soil and water sources all meet the standards. The breeding farm (household) should have a quiet environment, complete disinfection equipment, a strict disinfection system, strict control of grazing, and keep the Boer goat shed at suitable temperature and humidity with good ventilation, creating a good ecological environment for pollution-free Boer goat breeding.

--------------------------------------
2. "Green" feed rearing. Feed must come from fixed pastures and raw material production areas, and the production areas must be green crop production bases. Suitable high-quality forage grass varieties to cultivate include broadleaf ryegrass, Rumex k-1, alfalfa and Mexican corn, etc., with reasonable intercropping and relay cropping so that green feed can be supplied all year round. Throughout the entire Boer goat rearing process, use pollution-free "green" feed that meets the requirements.

--------------------------------------
3. Purchase purebred Boer goats. When purchasing Boer goats, be sure to buy from reputable breeders, and when buying breeding goats, also ask for their pedigree. Do not think that just because the head is brown and the ears droop it is a Boer goat, while ignoring the main markers of the Boer goat: a straight back and loin, thick and strong limbs, and well-developed muscles. The horns of rams are relatively curved and bend outward, the hide quality is good, and disease resistance and parasite resistance are strong.

--------------------------------------
4. Select excellent local female goats. In mutton sheep production, after selecting the Boer goat as the crossbreeding sire, necessary selection should be carried out on local female goats. Because for a long time the rearing, selection and breeding of goats have been neglected, along with unplanned random mating and inbreeding, many local breeds are impure, individuals tend to be small, and degeneration is serious. Therefore, to obtain good crossbreeding results, local goats must be crossbred and rejuvenated. Or directly use goats of relatively good quality as dams.

--------------------------------------
5. Make full use of hybrid vigor. Crossing Boer goats carrying many excellent genes with local female goats produces very obvious hybrid vigor in the offspring. Taking the birth weight, 2-month-old weight, 6-month-old weight and 6-month-old average daily gain of first-generation Boer crossbred goats as an example, they are increased by 80%, 75%, 70% and 60% respectively compared with local goats, the lambing rate reaches 180%-220%, the slaughter rate reaches more than 50%, and body weight increases by nearly 40%.

--------------------------------------
6. Improve feeding and management techniques. In feeding and management, the technical measures of "six changes" and "six promotions" should be implemented. The "six changes" are: change the abuse of drugs to drug-withdrawal rearing; change the practice of no routine epidemic prevention and treating only after illness to formulating a complete epidemic prevention and deworming program; change feeding a single type of grass to feeding diverse forage and implementing supplementary concentrated feed; change ground-level rearing to raised beds and bamboo beds; change open-sided sheds in winter to plastic warm sheds; change rams not castrated for fattening to castrated fattening. The "six promotions" are: promote disease prevention based on ecological principles, improve product quality, and achieve pollution-free, residue-free, pollution-free green food; promote artificial insemination technology for sheep to improve the utilization rate of Boer goat rams; promote the breeding technology of three births in two years for female goats to improve the kidding rate of dams; promote the marketing technology of fattening that year's lambs within the same year to improve the marketing rate; promote appropriate-scale sheep rearing and management technology to improve the benefits of large-scale rearing; promote the combination of grazing and barn feeding to improve the level of scientific rearing. The sheep pen should be simple but not leaky, sheltered from wind and facing the sun, with dry ground, ensure lambs get enough colostrum, and after weaning manage them carefully and supplement salt and bone meal.

--------------------------------------
7. Improve the epidemic prevention and deworming system. Epidemic prevention should be combined with local actual conditions, a relatively complete epidemic prevention program should be formulated, epidemic prevention should be carried out in a planned way, and vaccines should use combined vaccines; individual infectious diseases that have been prevalent locally should also be prevented. The inside and outside of the sheep pen should be cleaned frequently and disinfected regularly. Disinfect with wood ash water or 10%-20% lime milk solution, or 5%-10% bleaching powder solution; when treatment is needed after illness occurs, use Chinese herbal medicine folk remedies for prevention and control; in summer, feed sheep fresh poplar leaves, which can serve both as feed and to prevent the occurrence of diarrhea; dried poplar flowers or fresh leaves can also be decocted, and the decoction taken and administered orally, which can treat diarrhea; to treat Boer goat mouth sores, take an appropriate amount of soybeans, roast them black in an iron pot, grind them into powder, pour in sesame oil and mix into a paste, then apply it lightly to the affected area of the goat, once a day, and generally 3-5 times will cure it.
