Water Color Regulation in Shrimp Ponds in the Mid-to-Late Stage
(Agricultural Wealth Network)     When whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and giant river prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) are raised to the mid-to-late stage, residual bait, feces and other large amounts of organic matter settle at the bottom of the pond. In particular, large amounts of N elements deposit at the pond bottom, causing an imbalance in the N:P ratio in the pond, which in turn causes abnormal reproduction and growth of algae, producing various dangerous water colors and causing great harm to shrimp farming. Below are some common dangerous water colors in shrimp ponds in the mid-to-late stage, along with some improvement experience and methods for such water quality for reference.

Dark green and turbid - blue-green or dark green water color

This water color is relatively common in the mid-to-late stage of farming. Floating matter sometimes appears on the surface of this water color, large amounts of suspended blue-green particles exist in the water body, the water surface appears oily, the water quality is thick and turbid, the color is dead, it is sticky and slippery, and foam trails are difficult to dissipate. This indicates that the concentration of harmful algae is high and that they have begun to die. On the surface where foam accumulates at the downwind area, obvious dirt is attached, accompanied by a fishy and foul odor. The water lifted by the aerator is dark green or dark blue-green. Shrimp in this water quality show obvious reduced feeding, empty intestines and empty stomachs, weakened vitality, and shrunken thin bodies. If proper improvement treatment is not carried out in time, it will likewise lead to the disease hazards described above. Countermeasures: drain and exchange about 15 cm of water, splash detoxification stress essence liquid over the whole pond at 3 mu-m per bottle, and after 1-2 days at around 9 a.m. use Bacillus strain culture (each small bottle with 2 jin of brown sugar) cultured for 24 hours, then use each small bottle for 5 mu-m of water body. According to the water color conditions, after another 2-3 days use pond bottom cleaner at 6 mu per bag and directly spread it dry.

    Sauce red, blackish brown

This kind of water often contains large amounts of harmful algae, such as flagellates and naked dinoflagellates. The main reason is that bait feeding is unscientific, residual bait and feces increase in the mid-to-late stage, and bottom improvement is not timely, leading to an increase in suspended organic matter in the water body and eutrophication of the water quality, causing harmful algae to form a dominant population and inhibit the growth of beneficial algae. The neuroparalytic toxins secreted by these harmful algae can easily cause shrimp poisoning and death. This water quality is thick and turbid, with dead color, sticky and slippery, and a fishy foul odor. Foam trails are long and very difficult to dissipate. On the surface of the foam accumulated at the downwind area, obvious dirt is attached. The water color lifted by the aerator is light dark red or dark blackish red. Shrimp show obvious reduced feeding, empty intestines and empty stomachs, and obviously weakened vitality. If this water quality is not treated timely and properly, it will certainly trigger serious diseases, such as bottom-kicking stealth death, red body and white spot, and enlarged and necrotic liver. Countermeasures: drain and exchange about 15-20 cm of water, splash detoxification stress essence liquid at 3 mu per bottle, on the second day use pond bottom cleaner at 6 mu per bag and spread it dry over the whole pond, and after 2 days mix 1 bucket of ecological water-fertilizing paste with 1 packet of Green Water No. 1 at 8 mu-m, soak for 2 hours, and splash the mixture over the whole pond.

Yellow mud color - muddy turbid water color

This water color is mainly due to aging of the pond bottom, excessive levels of harmful substances in the bottom mud, and loss of the proper biological activity of the bottom mud. When weather changes occur, it easily becomes turbid and unclear, and the water color is extremely difficult to regulate. Most farmers use physical water clarifiers such as polyaluminium chloride and potassium aluminum sulfate for treatment. This method cannot fundamentally solve the phenomenon of turbid water and is prone to rebound. The treatment of muddy turbid water quality should be carried out gradually: (1) drain and exchange about 15 cm of water, use bottom-dwelling quick relief agent and spread it dry to activate the bottom substrate, and on the second day use pond bottom cleaner at 6 mu-m per bag and spread it dry; (2) mix ecological water-fertilizing paste with Bacillus strain culture liquid and splash the mixture; (3) after the water color has been cultivated, soak water-retaining probiotic with Green Water No. 1 for 2 hours, then splash the mixture over the whole pond to stabilize the algal phase.
