Effective Measures and Methods for Controlling Excessive Growth of Wheat Before Winter

Strategies for Controlling Excessive Growth of Wheat Before Winter
(Agricultural Wealth Network) As the saying goes: "Wheat cannot thrive twice." Excessive growth of wheat seedlings before winter can advance the growth period, reduce nutrient accumulation, and lower cold resistance, which is not conducive to safe overwintering.

1. Weak seedlings caused by too early sowing

This type of excessive-growth seedling often thrives first and then weakens. When encountering low temperatures of minus 10°C lasting about 5 hours in winter, frost damage will occur. It is recommended to roll (compact) the soil on sunny days. After rolling, loosen the soil with a hoe in time, and combine with watering, applying 15 kg of ammonium bicarbonate per mu; if necessary, spray the leaves with a 0.2-0.3% chlormequat chloride solution, which can also inhibit excessive growth and resist frost damage.

2. Excessive-growth seedlings caused by too large a seeding rate

It is recommended to thin the seedlings in time to establish a suitable population structure and promote individual development; then combine with watering and supplement an appropriate amount of quick-acting nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer to compensate for the excessive consumption of soil nutrients.

3. Excessive-growth seedlings caused by excessive fertilizer and water

It is recommended to deep hoe to cut roots. When the main stem of the wheat seedling grows 5 leaves, deep hoe 5-7 cm between the wheat rows to cut off some secondary roots, control nutrient absorption, reduce tillering, and cultivate strong seedlings.

4. Excessive-growth seedlings caused by improper variety selection

Some spring and weak winter varieties sown too early can also lead to excessive growth before winter; this type of excessive-growth seedling is most susceptible to freezing in winter. It is recommended, on the basis of early hoeing and rolling, to mound soil around the roots before winter, or apply "covering manure" to protect the wheat seedlings for safe overwintering.
