Methods for Thinning and Final Thinning of Sesame
(Agricultural Wealth Network) Thinning and final thinning of sesame are usually carried out together with intertillage. Depending on the sowing method, the methods of thinning and final thinning also differ. For broadcast sowing, the first and second thinnings are done with a hoe together with weeding and loosening the soil. Final thinning is done by hand, because this ensures both even spacing and no damage to the seedlings; for drill-sown sesame, the first thinning is done by vertical intertillage on the drill rows, the second is best done by hand, and the third is final thinning by hand; for dibble sowing, thinning is mostly done by hand. The general approach to thinning and final thinning is: first, break up “clumped” seedlings; second, thin out weak and small seedlings; third, establish thick and strong seedlings. On the basis of the second thinning and the reserved seedlings, final thinning should, according to the planned density, establish a complete, even and strong stand, ensuring rational close planting.
