The Time and Method for Topping Sesame
(Agricultural Wealth Network) Spring sesame will naturally age in the later stage; once the sesame has finished flowering, pinching off the top 1 to 2 cm can reduce yellow tips. For early-maturing summer sesame and autumn sesame, the suitable time for topping depends on the temperature conditions in each region. Early-crop summer sesame should be topped 25 to 30 days before normal maturity, that is, topped at the closing stage; the suitable time for topping late sesame should be about 20 days after the first flowering; if the cultivation method of high density and early topping is used, then top 10 to 15 days after the first flowering. Autumn sesame should be topped 15 to 20 days after the first flowering. According to the temperature conditions at the time and the vigor of the sesame growth, topping can be appropriately advanced or delayed. For topping, it is sufficient to pick off the top 2 to 3 cm.
