Characteristics of watermelon's water requirements
(Agricultural Wealth Network) Watermelon consumes a large amount of water throughout its entire growth period, but it requires dry air and the soil moisture content must not be too high. Its soil moisture requirements are lower during the seedling stage, slightly higher during the vine extension stage, and greatest during the fruit enlargement stage. When water supply is insufficient during the fruit enlargement stage, it will affect the yield and quality of the fruit. Watermelon root development requires relatively more soil oxygen and is not tolerant of waterlogging; excessive irrigation will reduce root vitality and even cause root rot. About 1 month before harvest and 3 to 5 days before and after heavy rain, irrigation should be stopped to avoid affecting watermelon quality and causing water accumulation that damages the roots.
