Making Beds in Watermelon Fields
(Agricultural Wealth Network) In the humid climate zone of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China, the watermelon growing season has abundant rainfall and large rainfall amounts. Bed making is mainly based on the principle of facilitating drainage of accumulated water, and appropriate consideration should also be given to supplemental watering during the late growth period when summer drought occurs. Generally, the form of deep furrows and high beds is used, divided into wide and narrow types. Drainage ditches 30 cm deep are dug on both sides of the beds and connected with the drainage ditches around the watermelon field (about 50 cm deep), so as to drain accumulated water from the field. At the same time, during later drought periods, these drainage ditches can also be used for irrigating the watermelon field.
