Growth characteristics of fruit-bearing mother branches

The fruit-bearing mother branch, also called a jujube spur, is a short compressed branch formed by the sprouting of true buds on vegetative branches and secondary branches. Each year it sprouts and produces several fruit-bearing branches, which flower and bear fruit. Under normal conditions, the terminal main bud of the jujube spur grows very little each year, about 1 to 2 mm, while the secondary buds on it produce fruit-bearing branches each year. The fruit-bearing mother branch lengthens only slightly each year, and its thickening growth is about 1 mm per year. The fruiting capacity of fruit-bearing mother branches on vegetative branches is significantly lower than that of fruit-bearing mother branches on secondary branches, and their sprouting rate is also low. The fruiting capacity of slanting and horizontal fruit-bearing mother branches is higher than that of downward-growing fruit-bearing mother branches.
