The Method of Whip-and-Tongue Grafting

For whip-and-tongue grafting, first cut the rootstock at 5 to 20 cm above the ground, remove all branches below the cut, then select a scion whose branch diameter is similar to the thickness of the rootstock. Both the cut surface of the rootstock and the lower end of the scion are cut into straight, equal-length slanted cuts of 3 to 4 cm. At one-third of the way from the smooth end of the slanted cut, make a longitudinal cut along the wood grain, with a length exceeding one-third of the slanted cut. Insert the slanted cut surfaces and longitudinal cuts of the scion and rootstock against each other, align one branch surface of the joint, and wrap tightly with plastic film tape to retain moisture and prevent drying out.
