What are the methods for dealing with competing branches on fruit trees?
Methods for dealing with competing branches
Young trees in the early fruiting stage grow vigorously, and the top of the extension shoot often produces two vegetative shoots; the angle between them is very small, and they extend almost in parallel, so the secondary shoots grow in a crossing pattern. During winter pruning, select the suitably positioned vegetative shoot as the extension shoot and remove the other vegetative shoot from its base. If this situation occurs on a mature fruiting tree, it can be thinned or headed back according to the available space, so that the competing branch occupies a local space without competing with the main and lateral branches.
