How to handle extension shoots

When a jujube tree (Ziziphus jujuba) enters the renewal fruiting stage, its side branches, especially those on the lower part of the canopy, droop and extend, affecting the growth of intercropped crops and field management. At this time, water sprouts (vigorous vegetative shoots) often appear on the upper part of horizontal branches. These vegetative shoots need not all be pruned off; they can be headed back and trained into fruiting branch groups to occupy a certain space. For drooping branches, carry out renewal pruning and heading back, choose an upward angle, and leave 1 to 2 upward-growing buds at the cut when heading back, to promote upward growth of the branch tip, and pinch the tips during the growing season to control the growth of the extension shoots.
