Methods for handling mechanically damaged branches and diseased or pest-infested branches
When a jujube branch's extension shoot is wounded by wind or other causes, it stimulates the latent buds below to sprout new extension shoots. In this situation, if branch renewal is needed, the damaged branch can be sawed off, leaving the new extension shoot; if there is no space for growth, then cut away the injured part together with the water sprout. For diseased or pest-infested branches, besides pruning, a ring cut 0.5 cm wide should be made at the base of the main branch, deep enough to reach the xylem, to prevent the spread of pathogens such as jujube witches' broom. Branches harmed by scale insects and cicadas must be cut off and burned.
