Using Suckers to Renew Old Jujube Trees

When a jujube tree enters old age, not only does its canopy become incomplete, but the heartwood of the trunk also rots. At this point, you can score the bark at the root zone to encourage the roots to sprout root suckers, or score or cut the roots of the trunk near the ground to stimulate new shoots; select and keep 1 to 2 strong sucker buds and train them into a new trunk. After the new trunk and main scaffold branches have basically formed, saw off the old dead parent branch along the ground or just above the base of the new trunk. In this way, the newly trained plant can grow and bear fruit quickly.
