Hello, Teacher Zhu. My meat pigeons have been coughing for days, spitting up yellow liquid, their droppings are green, occasionally their necks twist, and they eat less. Is this Newcastle disease? How do I treat and prevent it?

Answer: Comrade Zhang Gangfen:
Hello. Based on the symptoms described, I cannot give a definite judgment as to what is causing it. Pigeon Newcastle disease, commonly known as pigeon plague, is an acute infectious disease of pigeons caused by pigeon paramyxovirus type I.
    1. Diagnosis: The most obvious difference between Newcastle disease and other infectious diseases is the passing of watery droppings, and large amounts of watery droppings. These droppings are green watery droppings in which water and feces do not mix. Only after complications appear do the following occur: a. sticky milky-white or dark green loose droppings, the sick pigeon is listless, body temperature rises, and the feet feel hot when held; b. fluid accumulates in the crop, holding the bird upside down makes it spit sour water, loss of appetite, excessive drinking, diarrhea right after drinking, and a sour foul smell; c. some lay soft-shelled or sand-shelled eggs, and in severe cases egg laying stops; d. feathers are puffed up and stand erect, the head droops and the neck is drawn in, both wings droop, and the bird cannot fly; e. mild difficulty breathing, runny nose, watery eyes, open-mouth abdominal breathing accompanied by wheezing; f. the sick pigeon's head and neck tremble or twist sideways, tilt backward, accompanied by paroxysmal spasms and other neurological symptoms; g. difficulty feeding, unsteady standing, circling movement, and finally refusal to eat, extreme emaciation, even paralysis, often dying lying on the ground or dying of dehydration; h. some sick pigeons vomit severely, spitting yellow water from the mouth before death, and the liquid has a sour foul smell. Pigeons that have not been vaccinated have a higher mortality rate and a short course of disease, and acute cases can die within 24 hours.
    2. Treatment: As long as the above obvious symptoms appear, it can be judged as this disease. a. Immediately isolate the sick pigeons, thoroughly clean the entire loft to ensure twice a day, and promptly remove the grain vomited by sick pigeons; b. Use 84 disinfectant and Lysol disinfectant, and the concentration can be higher (note that Lysol is “highly toxic”; do not spray it into the pigeons' eyes or onto the grain), and thoroughly disinfect inside and outside the loft twice a day in rotation for 10-15 days; c. Add (human-use) “Gentamicin Injection” of 80,000 units to the drinking water, 10 ampoules per 5 kg of water, plus 10-12 g of multivitamin electrolytes, used continuously for 4-5 days as one course of treatment; generally two or three courses are enough to cure it, and you may add one more course according to the situation to consolidate the curative effect; d. After three courses, that is, after cure, continue to give multivitamin electrolytes, preferably liver extract, for 3-4 days, to thoroughly clear away the drug residues in the pigeons' bodies; e. During the epidemic infection period, the medicated water in the drinkers must be changed every day (to avoid wasting medicine, it is best to mix the drinking water according to the number of pigeons), and wash and disinfect them inside and outside each time; f. Reduce the feed amount to 1/3 of the usual amount, at least cut it by half, and feed small grains that are easy to digest.
    3. Disinfection: Regular disinfection of the pigeon loft is an important means and measure for preventing and controlling disease. Practice has proved that 7-10 days in spring, summer, and autumn, and 20-30 days in winter are best. This is because bacteria and viruses also need a certain amount of time and conditions to reproduce and even spread and become epidemic. You cannot wait until they run rampant before carrying out disinfection work.
