Can pregnant sows be vaccinated against PRRS
Hello. The "Technical Specifications for Immunization against Highly Pathogenic Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (Trial)" (hereinafter referred to as the "Immunization Specifications") issued by the Ministry of Agriculture stipulates that the inactivated vaccine for highly pathogenic porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome is only for healthy pig herds, is prohibited for diseased pigs, and is prohibited within 21 days before slaughter.
The Immunization Specifications recommend that farmers should vaccinate their pig herds according to the epidemic situation of highly pathogenic porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome. When vaccinating the same pig herd, it is best to use vaccines from the same manufacturer and the same batch number. Before use, the vaccine should be carefully checked, and the manufacturer, vaccine batch number and expiry date should be recorded in detail. If there is damaged packaging, emulsion breakdown and layering, or color change, it must not be used.
The vaccine should be stored protected from light at 2°C-8°C, and should be restored to room temperature before use (place at room temperature for 2-3 hours after taking it out of the refrigerator), and shaken well before injection; after the vaccine is opened, it must be used up within the same day. The instruments used for vaccination should be sterile; a 12-gauge needle should generally be used for vaccination; one needle per pig to avoid cross-contamination. The injection site is the muscle behind the ear, and the injection site should be strictly disinfected with iodine tincture or 75% alcohol. At the same time, records should be kept, including: the pig's breed, age in days, sex, and if it is a pregnant sow, the gestation period should also be included; the source of the vaccine, batch number, vaccination time, etc. After vaccination, the vaccination instruments and all waste should be subjected to harmless treatment in accordance with relevant regulations.
Regarding the vaccination procedure, piglets are vaccinated for the first time after weaning, with a dose of 2 ml. In areas where highly pathogenic porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome is prevalent, according to actual conditions, the same dose can be used for 1 booster immunization one month after the first vaccination. The vaccination procedure for replacement gilts before 70 days of age is the same as for commercial piglets; afterward, 1 booster immunization is given 1 month before each farrowing, with a dose of 4 ml. The vaccination procedure for breeding boars before 70 days of age is the same as for commercial piglets; afterward, booster immunization is given once every 6 months, with a dose of 4 ml. After vaccination, the pigs' reactions should be carefully observed. A few pigs may have allergic reactions, and in severe cases epinephrine can be injected, along with auxiliary treatment measures. After vaccination, a few pigs may have transient reactions such as elevated body temperature and reduced feed intake, which generally recover on their own within 2 days.
The Immunization Specifications require that the inactivated vaccine for highly pathogenic porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome produced by nationally approved designated enterprises must be used, and this vaccine bears a "two-in-one" vaccine anti-counterfeiting label with the "China Veterinary Drug Quality Supervision" mark.
