Dragon bone cactus wants to shoot through the roof? The roots must be strong; prune it this way and it won't topple even at over ten meters, and cuttings will root easily

Dragon bone, also called triangular spurge, is considered by many people to be a plant in the cactus family, and some even call it the "universal grafting rootstock." Actually, it is a plant in the Euphorbiaceae family, and can only be grafted with Euphorbiaceae plants such as crown of thorns or the crested euphorbia. It cannot be grafted with cactus-family plants such as Christmas cactus or ball cacti. Many people have some misconceptions about this

So propagating dragon bone by cuttings is also very simple, similar to taking cuttings of cactus-family plants

We can take the branches pruned off when trimming the dragon bone, or cut a section of branch about ten cm long, to use for cuttings. Do not cut too short; if cut too short, the branch is prone to shriveling back, causing the cutting to fail

If we want the dragon bone to have a beautiful shape, we need to prune it regularly. You can prune it into a nine-column shape: when the dragon bone grows to over ten cm, cut off its top, then let it branch out side shoots

When the side buds grow out, we keep the three side buds on the three ribs, then when the side buds grow to over ten cm, cut off their tops again, so there are nine side buds. In this way, no matter how tall the dragon bone grows, it will not look top-heavy, because it has nine evenly spaced pillars supporting it below

The pruned branches can be used for cuttings. Whether cut from a node or cut from halfway along a branch, they can all be used for cuttings. Let the cut branches dry for about seven days, and insert them after the wound has shriveled. If you do not let them dry, it is easy to cause bacterial infection and rot

For the cutting soil, you can use peat soil, perlite, and vermiculite in a 1:1:1 ratio, mixed like this. You can also use river sand and leaf mold, each making up half the ratio, mixed together

When taking cuttings, moisten the soil to make it damp soil, pot it up, and after inserting the dragon bone branch, do not water at first. Put it in a cool, ventilated place, and wait until the potting soil is dry before watering it

After a week it can take root. After rooting, we can gradually move it to a place with fairly ample light

The growth of dragon bone requires ample light, but in summer we should give it appropriate shading. In other seasons, give it ample light. When watering, be sure to water thoroughly only after the soil has dried completely. During its growing season, apply fertilizer once or twice a month, and use a fertilizer mainly based on nitrogen, which can make its branches thick and strong and grow quickly
