A must-read for plant killers: learn this method and your plants can survive without watering

When Siyue usually talks with everyone about succulents, the topic that comes up most is care issues, about pots, soil, light, watering, pest prevention, black rot, mushy rot, and so on.
To be honest, although succulents are small, there are plenty of care problems. Especially in summer, almost every day someone asks Siyue, when exactly should succulents be watered? Not watering risks dying of thirst, while watering risks drowning them. For this kind of "water-fearing" person, switching directly to hydroponics is the easiest solution.
Everyone is familiar with hydroponic succulents, but not many people have actually tried them. So how exactly should hydroponic succulents be done, should the water cover the roots? What issues need attention in hydroponics?

Succulents are water-loving babies
Once summer arrives, both flowers and succulents become difficult to grow, and hydroponic plants with their built-in cooling effect become everyone's favorite. Fresh greenery paired with a transparent glass bottle is pure and natural, with a built-in cooling effect, becoming a place of coolness in the scorching heat.
Cool and quiet fern-leaf plants,
one look and you calm right down.
Gray-green cactus-type plants,
suitable for minimalist-style decor,
and their heat-relieving and cooling effect is also first-rate.
String of pearls like a green waterfall, flowing out of a test tube,
smashing the heat waves at home one bead at a time.
Coolness in summer, a humidifier in winter, that is what hydroponic plants are. Of course, not all plants can adapt to a hydroponic environment. Common pothos, spider plants, aloe, hyacinths, and spider plants can all be grown hydroponically.
Besides these plants, plants that originally grow in water can also be grown hydroponically. In addition, cacti and succulents, which we think of as very drought-tolerant, can also be grown hydroponically. Perhaps quite a few succulent fans are puzzled: aren't succulents most averse to waterlogging and root rot, so how can they be grown hydroponically?
In fact, so-called waterlogging and root rot refers to when the roots of succulent plants are buried in soil, and waterlogging causes poor respiration. So the culprit of waterlogging is lack of oxygen at the roots, not too much water, friends!
Compared with soil culture, hydroponics has many advantages~ Care is very simple, most suitable for people like Siyue who are absorbed in work and lack the energy to take care of plants.
In the early growth stage of succulents,
hydroponics is best for rooting,
and hydroponics also brings a double enjoyment of beauty.
After succulents are grown in water,
you no longer have to think about watering the plants!
You only need to change the water and add water, very suitable for beginners and lazy people!
Hydroponics can make plants root quickly,
especially newly bought succulents, which are relatively fragile,
if you are too lazy to repot, hydroponics can help them grow quickly.
Hydroponic plants take no effort at all to care for, but how exactly should it be done, and what needs attention? Siyue will use succulents as an example to sort it out for you.
Hydroponic methods
Compared with soil culture, hydroponics is much simpler to carry out. Taking succulents as an example, common methods include:completeplant hydroponics, stem rooting, and leaf rootingthree methods.
Complete plant
Take the complete succulent plant out of the soil and rinse off the soil with water. Use scissors to cut off excess roots, leaving only a small amount of main root. After cutting, do not rush to put it in water. It needs to dry for one or two days before being placed in the hydroponic container.
The water level should be determined according to different succulent varieties. Varietieslike Haworthia cooperi with well-developed roots can have more water added, while Echelias have relatively few root hairs, so it is enough to let the water touch the roots.~
Stem hydroponics
When using the stem rooting method, choose a healthy, pest-free, complete stem, and keep the cut smooth and even.
After cutting the stem, the treatment is similar to that for a complete plant. It needs to be placed in a cool, ventilated place to dry for one or two days.
When rooting stems and leaves in water, be careful never to let the roots touch the water. The water surface is best kept 1-2 cm away from the roots. Then place the container in a ventilated, shaded place. Generally, rooting will begin in about a week.
Leaf hydroponics
The success rate of leaf hydroponics is somewhat lower than the previous two methods, and the method is similar to that for stems.
When placing them in the container, pay attention to the size of the container opening. If the opening is too large, find a way to secure the leaf and never let it touch the water! Next, just place it in a cool, ventilated place and let it grow freely.
Key points for hydroponic care
Although hydroponics has no real difficulties and the success rate is above 90%, you still cannot be too laid-back and let it fend for itself. Grasp these basic points, and even a plant killer can become an expert.
Keep ventilation
Ventilation is the first principle of growing plants, and in hydroponics, of course, the container should also be placed in a spot with air circulation. Especially in indoor environments or enclosed balconies, open the windows frequently for ventilation.
Change the water regularly
Hydroponic succulents do not need watering, but they do need water added and changed. When you notice too much water in the container has evaporated, add water in time.
Although hydroponic succulents do not need water changes as frequently as cut flowers, succulent roots consume relatively more oxygen through respiration, so the water needs to be changed regularly to ensure sufficient oxygen.
Prune the roots
When the roots in the water grow too densely, the old roots and long roots need to be pruned appropriately, so the roots have space to sprout new roots.
If rot appears at the roots of the succulent, promptly clean off the rotten parts completely, then change the water once a day until new roots grow out.
Prevent mosquitoes and insects
Friends with hydroponic experience certainly know that mosquito larvae easily appear in hydroponic containers, which is very annoying.
There is a very ecological way to prevent mosquito larvae: keep fish in the container, and the small fish will eat the larvae for you. This method is not only environmentally friendly, but also adds more enjoyment.
Hydroponic duration
Hydroponic succulents are certainly beautiful, but compared with soil culture, hydroponics clearly has weaker long-term nutrition. Therefore, the hydroponic period for succulents should not be too long, with two or three months being best. You can grow them hydroponically in summer, and when the weather turns cooler, take them out and transplant them into soil.
If you want to extend the hydroponic period, you can add nutrient solution to the water to ensure sufficient nutrition.
Just how simple hydroponic succulents are, try it and you will know! One friend of Siyue, known as a "succulent killer," fell into the hydroponics pit and easily grew beautiful succulents~
The method for growing other plants in water is similar to that for succulents. Just put the whole plant into a container and place it in a ventilated, shaded place, and it will root and grow.
Friends who simply cannot grow plants well, do not keep stubbornly struggling down the path of soil culture. Change direction, and perhaps you can become a plant expert~
If you have never been able to keep plants alive,
remember, it is not your fault,
you just have not found the method that suits you!
If you have any other good ways to grow plants,
do not keep them hidden
