A Complete Guide to the Science of Largemouth Bass Fisheries
Fisheries Science Spotlight: Largemouth Bass
English name: Largemouth bass
Local name: California bass
Taxonomic status: Perciformes, Centrarchidae, Micropterus
Morphological characteristics: Body laterally compressed, slightly thick in the back, spindle-shaped, covered with small scales. Lower jaw slightly protruding; the inner sides of both upper and lower jaws densely covered with serrated keratinized projections. Mouth large, with villiform sharp fine teeth. Dorsal fin IX, I-13~14; anal fin III-9; lateral line scales 62~63. Body color pale golden yellow with black.
Ecological habits: Survival water temperature 2~34°C, optimal temperature 15~25°C, dissolved oxygen above 4mg/L. A carnivorous fish, fierce by nature with strong predatory behavior, feeding on fish, shrimp and insects; when food is scarce they cannibalize one another. Under artificial rearing, in addition to feeding on chopped trash fish, they also accept formulated feed.
Geographical distribution: Native to freshwater waters of the Americas. Introduced to Ningxia in the 1990s.
Economic value: Strong disease resistance, tolerance to low temperatures, fast growth, short farming cycle, high economic value.
