Identification and Use of Common Fish Medications
   1. Antibacterial category  (1) Furazolidone, also called furazolidone. [blocked] powder, odorless, has broad-spectrum antibacterial effect, low toxicity, can be used orally or as a medicated bath, mainly used to prevent and treat eel gill rot, enteritis, red fin disease, and red spot disease. Orally, mix 15-20 grams of medication per 100 kg of feed, one course of treatment is 3-5 days; for medicated bath, sprinkle the medicinal powder solution over the whole pond at 2 grams per cubic meter of water. Because this medication is difficult to dissolve in water, it can be soaked and mixed with alcohol before use. (2) Chloramphenicol. White powdery medication, easily soluble in water, effective against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, mainly used to treat eel enteritis, vibriosis, Edwardsiella disease, and skin rot disease. Orally, use 30 grams of medication per 100 kg of feed, feed continuously for 3-5 days for early prevention and treatment. (3) Oxytetracycline. Oxytetracycline [blocked] powder, has antibacterial and bacteriostatic effects, can be used to treat a variety of bacterial diseases, mainly oral, use 40 grams of medication per 100 kg of feed, feed continuously for 5-7 days.

   2. Insecticidal category   (1) Copper sulfate and ferrous sulfate mixture. The two medications are transparent blue and green crystals respectively, so they are also called blue vitriol and green vitriol, have strong astringent and insecticidal effects, and are toxic to Sinergasilus, Trichodina, Chilodonella, Glossatella, etc. Use 0.7 grams of medication per cubic meter of water, of which copper sulfate is 0.5 grams and ferrous sulfate is 0.2 grams. (2) Crystalline trichlorfon. The pure product is a white solid, containing 90% active ingredient. It dissolves in water to produce dichlorvos, which can poison and kill many parasites. Use 0.7-1 gram of medication per cubic meter of water. Application should be carried out in the morning, but it must not be used together with alkaline medications such as lime, so as to avoid poisoning the fish.

   3. Dual-purpose insecticidal and bactericidal category   (1) Formalin. It is a water-soluble medicinal liquid containing 40% formaldehyde, has a strong irritating odor, and has a strong broad-spectrum insecticidal and bactericidal effect. Generally use 25-30 grams of medication per cubic meter of water, and when the condition is severe it can be increased to 40 grams. It has good efficacy in preventing and treating eel gill rot disease, red fin disease, and skin rot disease and hole disease of freshwater fish, but this medication volatilizes and loses effectiveness very easily in sunlight, so application should be carried out in the evening or at night to improve the insecticidal and sterilization effect. (2) Potassium permanganate. Purple elongated crystals, easily soluble in water, strong insecticidal and bactericidal ability, mainly used to kill bacteria and parasites on the body surface of fish.

   4. Medication precautions: (1) Water body measurement and medication dosage must be calculated correctly. (2) Before medication, first drain part of the pond water, which can save medication dosage and reduce costs. (3) After 8 hours of medicated bath, add water or change water to regulate water quality. (4) If sick fish swim rapidly in the water after medication, it indicates the concentration is too high, and application should be stopped immediately and the water changed. (5) The medicinal liquid should be sprinkled evenly, and aerators should be used to increase oxygen.
