Symptom Identification and Prevention Methods for Yellowhead Disease in Grass Shrimp
Yellowhead Disease in Grass Shrimp
Yellowhead Disease in Grass Shrimp
Cause: Caused by infection with a baculovirus known as yellowhead virus (YBV).
Symptoms and pathology: The main symptoms are: the body color turns white, and the gills and hepatopancreas appear pale yellow.
Epidemiology: In shrimp farming in Thailand, a disease known as yellowhead virus disease is quite severe, and in recent years a similar disease (Yellow Head Disease-like Virus, YHD) has also occurred in Japanese shrimp (Penaeus japonicus) farming in Taiwan, China.
Diagnostic methods: Through squash preparations of the gills and subcutaneous tissue of dying shrimp, and HE staining of tissue sections, large numbers of inclusions in round basophilic cytoplasm can be seen, and a definitive diagnosis can be obtained using RT-PCR, Western blot, or nucleic acid probes.
