Symptoms: The body surface of the diseased fish is congested and hemorrhagic on both sides, the upper and lower jaws and the snout are congested, the fin bases and fin membranes are congested and hemorrhagic; in severely affected fish some scales fall off, and some form ulcerated spots. When the diseased fish is dissected, the intestinal wall shows congestion.

Pathogen: A virus; the specific pathogen requires further study.

Clinical diagnosis: A preliminary diagnosis can be made by observing the external symptoms; confirmation requires virological study.

Epidemiology: The disease occurs from June to November, with the peak epidemic season in September and October. Both young-of-the-year fish and 2-year-old fish can be infected. Once the disease breaks out, there is currently no effective control method; the mortality rate of diseased fish is above 50%, and in severe cases as high as above 80%. This disease has occurred in seabass raised in ponds or cages in Laizhou, Shandong, and Xiangshan Port, Zhejiang.

    Prevention and control methods:

① Implement a strict quarantine system to prevent the pathogen from being introduced via broodstock or fry and fingerlings.

② Aquaculture ponds should be thoroughly desilted and disinfected, using 150 kg of quicklime per mu, or 25 kg of bleaching powder (containing 30% effective chlorine).

③ Before fry and fingerlings are stocked into ponds or cages, soak them in 50 mg/L (water) povidone-iodine for 5-10 minutes.

④ Suitable stocking density and no feeding of spoiled or deteriorated fresh and live bait.
