Causes and Prevention of Sow Infertility or Low Litter Size
Many breeders often frown and feel helpless about the infertility or low litter size of the sows they raise. In fact, through specific analysis, we can easily identify the causes. As long as corresponding measures are taken, these problems can be solved.

First, poor feeding management, extreme malnutrition, insufficient energy, protein, essential amino acids and vitamins, and feeding moldy and spoiled feed; sows kept too fat, causing ovarian degeneration, etc. For this situation, it can be gradually solved by simply improving feed management conditions.

Second, defects in the sows themselves and problems related to diseases.

    (1) Disorders of the sow's reproductive organs. For example, the shape and position of the cervix are abnormal, hindering sperm from entering the uterus and causing infertility. Such sows should not be kept for breeding.

    (2) Disease factors. For example, endometritis and vaginitis, commonly with pus discharge and a foul odor; flushing the uterus can achieve good results. The method is: first flush the uterus with normal saline; after the pus is discharged, inject penicillin (200,000 units dissolved in 20 ml of distilled water) or streptomycin (1 g dissolved in 20 ml of distilled water). Generally, after repeating 3 to 4 times, the pus can be completely cleared. Long-term estrus in sows may indicate ovarian disease; infectious diseases or severe parasites may also cause infertility. For such diseases, certain results can be expected through veterinary diagnosis and treatment.

The boar's reasons. Due to genetic reasons, improper feeding management, or illness, the boar's semen quality becomes poor, causing infertility or low productivity in the sows mated with it.

There are also human factors. Most are caused by improper artificial insemination techniques. After improving the techniques and strictly following operating procedures, obvious results can be achieved.
